DEVONtechnologies
DEVONtechnologies is a German Mac shop that has been making information-management software since the early 2000s. Their homepage asks "Would Umberto Eco have bought a Mac for this?", which tells you exactly who they think their customer is: someone with more documents than filing system.
What their shit actually is
- DEVONthink — the flagship. A local-first database for documents: PDFs, notes, web archives, mail, whatever you throw in. Two features made its name: automatic classification (it learns which folder a document belongs in) and "See Also," which surfaces related documents by content, not filename.
- DEVONthink To Go — iOS companion with sync.
- DEVONagent — meta-search that runs your query across multiple engines and clusters the results. Pre-dates every "AI research assistant" by a decade.
- DEVONsphere Express — the "discover hidden connections" sidekick.
- Needful Things — their freebies shelf.
The part that matters
The joke about DEVONthink is that it was doing AI before AI was cool, except it isn't a joke: classification and See Also have been content- analysis features running locally for twenty years — no subscription, no cloud round-trip, no model card, no apology. In 2026 that same category of feature gets you a $200M seed round and a waitlist. Here it's been a checkbox in a document manager since roughly the Bush administration.
This page is a stub until real usage evidence lands in it — the plan is a proper review once the current DEVONthink setup has enough mileage to have opinions about sync, OCR, and whether See Also still beats grep.
