Dia — $610 million of knowledge-worker conversion therapy

  • Source: Atlassian announcement · Dia Pro retirement (mined from the owner's backlog, 2026-08-26)
  • Verdict: keep
  • Why: not dead yet — which in this series is the diagnosis, not the reprieve. The Browser Company already had one cult product in maintenance (Arc, feature-frozen May 2025) when Atlassian paid $610 million in September 2025 for the second one. The stated vision: a browser "built for work," with security, compliance, and admin controls baked in, for the knowledge workers of the world. Paul Thurrott's contemporaneous review was titled "It Looks Like Atlassian is Going to Ruin Dia for Everyone," which has aged like a prophecy.

Since then: the $20/month Dia Pro plan was quietly retired at the end of May 2026 — subscribers refunded, the settings page scrubbed, with only "making room for what's next" offered as eulogy. Every signpost points toward the enterprise SaaS funnel. The subtype here is the acquisition that doesn't kill the product so much as slowly replace it with a meeting about the product.

For the record: in the owner's original browser-doom chat, Dia was the patient being examined. It survived the examination. Whether that was mercy is above this entry's pay grade.
